Advances in MDCT Dose Reduction

Recent technical advances in Multi-Detector CT as it pertains to potential dose reduction. Conventional and new dose reduction techniques, when used in combination, can achieve up to 80% dose reduction. Dose efficiency is reviewed with regards to photon counting detectors, x-ray tubes and reconstruction techniques, detector efficiency, x-ray beam filters, better active shielding, electronics (DAS), and optimization of image filters. Iterative reconstruction is highlighted as the mainstay in reconstruction techniques with still more room for dose reduction through photon counting technology. From a clinical perpective, sub-millisievert MDCT imaging applications are mentioned as a pending clinical reality.
